Planning for an epic Grad Send Off!
Join us in celebrating and commemorating our graduating students. We are getting
together to celebrate those who have supported us throughout the years in addition
to saying good riddance to 2020. We may not be able to meet in person to celebrate
our graduating peers but it doesn't mean we can't celebrate them.
If you could suggest an entertainer to invite then who would it be? Submit your
dream choice
here.
More details coming soon :)
Contact the Graduate Minority Student Project (GMSP) at gmsp-ga@berkeley.edu if you, or your organization,
wants to join the celebration.
Soliciting ideas and speakers for continued PhD 101 Series
Did you enjoy our
PhD 101 series from last semester, including presentations
like “Welcome to Berkeley”, “Personal Finance 101”, the “Career Panel”, and
“Fellowships 101”? We have more ideas for this semester like “Goal Setting with
IDP’s”, “Critical Conversations with your Advisor”, and “Interrupting White
Feminism in Academia“; however, we could use some help in making them happen!
If you have someone in mind that you’d like to invite to host a workshop with
us, please let us know! GWE can provide compensation for speakers and money for
dinners or materials. Reach out to Alison Lui (alui@berkeley.edu) and Maria Echeverria (miecheverria@berkeley.edu) to be part
of the conversation!

Volunteer for GPS - Graduate Pathways to STEM
Apply by 10 pm on February 12, 2021
Graduate Pathways to STEM (GPS)
is an annual, one-day conference co-hosted
by UC Berkeley and Stanford University, aiming to support underrepresented
undergraduate students through the graduate school application process.
Undergraduate students, mostly rising sophomores and juniors, interested in
pursuing graduate education in STEM will attend seminars and workshops to
understand their options for graduate school. One of the events this year is a
Peer Advising Panel, where current graduate students will speak on various
topics. At the end of the conference, students that are interested will be
paired with a graduate student mentor who can provide personalized feedback
on their application materials and answer questions about the grad school
application process.
We are looking for current graduate students (PhD, MS, MEng, etc) interested
in participating in the Peer Advising Panel and/or being a GPS Peer Mentor.
The panel will take place on Saturday, February 20th from 2:00pm - 3:15 pm PST
on zoom, and panelists should arrive/log-in 5-10 minutes early to account for
any shifts in schedule (Berkeley-time will not be observed). Peer Advisors and
Peer Mentors, will need to prepare an introduction slide (template will be
provided if selected). If selected, we will notify you by Monday, February
15th and the 1-slide intro will be required to be uploaded two days later
(due by Wednesday, February 17th at 10pm PST). Peer Mentors will be matched
with attendees after the conference by email.
If you are available and interested in volunteering as either a Peer Advisor
during the panel or a Peer Mentor after the conference (or both!), please apply
using
this link by Friday, February 12, 2021 before 10 pm PST.
For questions and concerns please contact Alexander Alvara (engineer_alvara@berkeley.edu) or Maria Diaz de Leon Derby (maria.diaz@berkeley.edu).
Volunteer for POWER - Providing Opportunities for Women in Education and Research
Sign up by February 11, 2021
POWER – Bay Area is a mentoring program and workshop series for Bay Area
community college women in the physical sciences. The program is organized
by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from the departments of Astronomy,
Chemistry, Earth & Planetary Sciences, and Physics at UC Berkeley.
The program is targeted at women, particularly those from groups traditionally
underrepresented in STEM. As another underrepresented group in STEM, nonbinary
people are also welcome to participate. Students interested in the physical
sciences are welcome to apply, even if you haven’t decided on a major!
Current community college students are paired with a mentor with whom they
will meet 2-3 times during the semester. In addition, we host two workshops
each semester. Complete the sign-up form on the
POWER website by February 11, 2021.

opportunities in mathematics, science, engineering, computer science, and
technology. This year, we will be inviting 450 youth from the East Bay community
to explore math and science by participating in diverse online workshops and
interacting with womxn undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral volunteers.
We will need volunteers to assist all day with
the conference! Volunteers can sign up
